England thumped India in the 1st T20I at Wankhede

England beat India by 38 runs in 1st of three T20Is at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

THE SUMMARY

The English Women started the series on a positive note convincingly beating India by 38 runs. Losing the toss and being sent out to bat, the England batters were put on the back early on as India’s lead pacer Renuka Thakur dismissed both Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey in back-to-back deliveries with England reduced to 2 for 2 at the end of the first over.

The experienced heads off Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt rescued England from early collapse and stitched a record-breaking 138 runs for the 3rd wicket. It was the third-highest partnership against India Women for any wicket in T20Is. Danni Wyatt in her 150th T20I, continued her good record against India scoring her 13th T20I fifty and 3rd against India. She surpassed Meg Lanning and became the second-highest run-scorer against India in T20Is with 618 runs. She ended up getting dismissed by the debutant Saika Ishaque for 75 runs. Captain Heather Knight was dismissed early by another debutant Shreyanka Patil. Sciver-Brunt pushed England past 175 getting out for 77 runs. Wicket-keeper Amy Jones’s final fireworks helped England post 197/6 at the end of 20 overs. It was the 2nd highest total against India in T20Is.

Shafali Verma single-handedly tried to keep up with the required run rate

India Women having never chased a target above 174 came out to chase a mammoth 198. Shafali Verma gave a quick start from one end. But, India lost back-to-back wickets of Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodriguez for 6 and 4 runs respectively. World no.1 T20I bowler Sophie Ecclestone cramped the Indian middle order dismissing Harmanpreet Kaur and Kanika Ahuja for 26 and 15 runs respectively. She also dismissed well-set opener Shafali Verma for 52. Sarah Glenn, the leg spinner also gave good support by dismissing the slog over specialist Richa Ghosh for 21 runs resulting in India scoring just 159 and falling short of the target by 38 runs.

The English Spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn took four wickets and conceded just 40 runs in 8 overs combined. India with four Spinners in Deepti Sharma, Saika Ishaque, Shreyanka Patil, and Kanika Ahuja conceded 122 runs in 12 overs and took just 3 wickets.

India on the other hand dropped their scoring rate from 8.8 in Powerplay to 7.88 in the middle overs. They managed just 71 runs and lost 2 wickets in the process with only 2 overs going for 10+ runs.
